Our God Reigns

The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect. (Psalm 33:10)
Perhaps you have heard the story about the hawk, the lion, and the skunk. It seems they were having a discussion about which one of them was the greatest in the animal kingdom. The hawk spoke up first. “Clearly, I am the greatest animal because I can fly high above all the other animals and soar through the sky with majestic beauty.” The lion disagreed, “Everyone knows that I am the greatest. I have sharp teeth, powerful claws and a loud roar that commands the respect of all the other animals.” Lastly, the skunk made his pitch. “I may not be the biggest, and I may not be able to fly, but my natural defense mechanism strikes fear in any animal who would dare to come near me.”
About that time a huge grizzly bear came upon the scene and asked the other animals what they were discussing. They replied, “We are arguing over who is the greatest animal in the kingdom.” To that the grizzly bear remarked, “That’s easy!” Then he proceeded to settle the issue once and for all by eating every last one of them—hawk, lion, and stinker!
I can almost hear the boos and hisses as you react to that pun. I do have a point, however. I think God, the Creator of the universe, must get a kick out of watching His creation sit around and argue over what we deem to be important issues. As we debate back and forth, we often forget that with one swift word God can settle any argument we may be having. With one word, God can redirect our plans and activities. With one word, He can remind us who is really in charge in the world today.
The Bible says, “The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect” (Psalm 33:10). No matter how much power we think we have God is the One who is in heaven holding the controls. He is mighty and all-powerful. An anonymous psalmist put it this way, “But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases” (Psalm 115:3). That Psalm goes on to remind us that we should trust in God rather than people or idols. As the Almighty, He is our “help and our shield” (Psalm 115:9).
Our God reigns! In light of this, maybe our time would be best spent seeking His counsel and praying for His blessing. “There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the LORD’s counsel—that will stand” (Proverbs 19:21).

We are blessed by your programs. I’ve come to begin to realize I can never be too humble before the Lord. Just about every time I fall in my walk, it’s due to pride rearing its ugly head.
