Do You Know Who God Is?

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. (1 Timothy 1:17)
Several years ago, I had an incident that ended up on my running list of embarrassing moments. Actually, there were two incidents about five minutes apart. It was one of those days.
The episodes happened in a hotel lobby in Tulsa. I had just arrived at the hotel where I was scheduled to speak twice at a conference. I pulled up to the main entrance and went searching for a bellhop to help unload our NBW Ministries resources and take them to the exhibit hall.
It was crowded in the lobby as many guests were arriving for the conference. Fortunately, I spotted a bellhop standing next to an empty luggage cart.
“I am glad I found you. Are you helping anyone at the moment?” I asked. The man looked a bit puzzled and politely replied, “No. I’m just waiting for my wife who is in the restroom.” He was not a bellhop, and I felt like an idiot.
A few moments later, I went to the front desk to check in and request assistance unloading. A nice gentleman in a casual suit wearing a fedora was in line next to me. “Are you here for the conference?” I asked. “Yes, I am, J.B.” He replied.
Since he knew my name, I assumed he had seen some of my videos or perhaps attended another conference where I had spoken. “This guy must be a fan,” I thought to myself, trying not to let my pride show.
“Great!” I said. “Where are you from?” He answered, “Right here in Tulsa. Don’t you know who I am? I’m Phillip, the conference coordinator.”
I was mortified! I had spoken with Phillip several times on the phone, exchanged multiple emails, and even met him once at a separate event, yet I did not recognize him in the chaos of the moment. I apologized, and we both had a good chuckle.
We treat strangers differently than people we know. Do you know who God is? If you really knew God, it would impact how you relate to Him. It would fill you with awe and wonder. It would cause you to spontaneously stop what you are doing and give Him glory.
That is what happened to Paul as he was writing his first letter to Timothy. Paul was reflecting on God’s amazing grace and mercy in saving a sinner like himself. “I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man… and the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant” He said. He added, “This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief” (1 Timothy 1:15).
Then, as if overwhelmed by God’s goodness, he proclaimed, “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen” (1 Timothy 1:17).
Do you know who God is? He is the eternal King of the universe! “Behold, God is great, and we do not know Him; nor can the number of His years be discovered” (Job 36:26). “The LORD is King forever and ever…” (Psalm 10:16).
Do you know who God is? He is immortal and invisible! He is not like mankind, whom He created. “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead…” (Romans 1:20). “O Lord, there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears” (1 Chronicles 17:20).
Do you know who God is? He alone is wise! “To God, alone wise, be glory through Jesus Christ forever. Amen” (Romans 16:27). “Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe” (1 Corinthians 1:20–21).
We could go on and on enumerating the attributes of Almighty God that He has revealed to us in His Word. Do you know who God is? Let me encourage you today to read God’s Word. The Bible is God’s way of saying, “Here I am! Look at Me!”
His attributes are stunning to behold. His works are marvelous. King David cried, “I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High” (Psalm 9:1–2). David knew who God is. Do you?
Sometimes God’s attributes are beyond our comprehension. “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out” (Romans 11:33)! Nevertheless, we must study them, learn them, embrace them. That is how we will get to know who God is.
Do you know who God is? He is our Savior and Redeemer (Isaiah 49:26). God sent His Son into the world to save us from our sins. If you have not placed your faith in God’s Son, Jesus Christ, as the only One who can forgive your sin and give you the gift of eternal life, I urge you to do so today. If you already have been saved by faith, get to know the God who saved you. It will fill you with wonder and awe and stop you in your tracks!
